What is Email encryption?
Email encryption is a security measure that encodes an email message so that only the intended recipients can read it. Encrypting, or obscuring, emails is a process designed to keep cybercriminals—especially identity thieves—from getting hold of valuable information that they can use for monetary gain.
There are 2 ways to easily encrypt and secure an email message that may contain sensitive or confidential data.
- Enter the phrase Encrypt: at the beginning of your subject line.
When you send an encrypted email message, you'll notice the email is labeled as a protected message, and you'll see a lock to the right hand side of the email message.
2. When you create or reply to a mail message, click Options > Encrypt.
You'll notice you don't have to enter the Encrypt: phrase in the subject line, but the email messages still shows the email is protected as shown below.
